Who is Monsanto and Why You Should Care

Nearly 1 million signatures were submitted to place the Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act on the California ballot this November. This act will require labeling of genetically engineered ingredients on food products sold in California and ban the practice of labeling GMO foods as “natural”.

And with California having the eighth largest economy in the world, getting this bill passed will affect food labeling throughout the country.

People realize that passing this law in California is the first critical step toward national GMO labeling laws.”

Currently there is no way to know if the food you are eating contains genetically engineered ingredients. Almost 50 countries – including Russia, China, Japan and the European Union – require labeling of genetically engineered food and ingredients.

What does Monsanto have to do with this?

Monsanto is a multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation and the world leader in genetically modified (GM) crops and seeds.

Monsanto has a rich history in producing toxic substances: PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls), dioxin (Agent Orange), Aspartame, fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and rBST (Recombinant bovine somatotropin, a genetically engineered growth hormone given to dairy cows to make them produce more milk).

This leader in the biotech industry – along with the Farm Bureau, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, and other corporate agribusinesses – is raising millions of dollars to make sure the California labeling effort is defeated.

“… Despite Monsanto’s claims to the contrary, scientists are clear: genetically engineered food has been linked to a wide range of health hazards, including kidney and liver damage, infertility, auto-immune disorders, allergies and autism, accelerated aging, and birth defects…

We have the right to know if the food we buy has been genetically engineered…. It’s time to take back our food. Our farms. Our power. It’s time to show Monsanto what ordinary people like us can do when we come together. It’s time to drop the money bomb on Monsanto.”
